The Murray State Rifle squad opened the spring semester at home over the weekend with matches against Ole Miss and Nebraska at the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray, Ky.
On Saturday, MSU defeated Ole Miss in a match that could have gone either way, 4639-4622.
Emily Quiner led MSU in smallbore with a 578, followed by Nehemiah Gillman and Katie Cleven at 577. Other MSU scores included Ashley Rose (573), Bill Harvey (571). Caroline Barber (570), Mike Burzynski (569) and Kyle Donnan (559).
In air rifle, The Racers were led by Cleven at 587, followed by Quiner (586), Barber (582), Rose (580), Donnan (579), Burzynski (572) and Harvey (569).
“I thought there were some good things Saturday,” MSU Head Coach Alan Lollar said. “Our team smallbore score was about where it was in the fall and Caroline Barber shot a personal best. It was a chance to knock the rust off, and we had to show up and compete.”
The Racers entertained an old friend on Monday
Morgan Hicks, a former All-American at Murray State, brought her Nebraska Cornhuskers to MSU.
“The Racers took the match 4657–4602 and got a personal best in both guns from Nehemiah Gillman with a 583 in smallbore and a 591 in air rifle.
Quiner turned in good scores with a 577 and 590, while Rose and Donnan had 572 in smallbore and Rose was one point off her personal best air rifle with a 582. Other MSU scores in air rifle included Barber (585) and Cleven (583). Other Smallbore scores included Cleven (576), Burzynski (558) and Harvey (573).
“I was proud of the way we competed on Monday,” Lollar added.” After coming back a week early to train, and having one match under our belt this semester, we showed that we are focused and ready for the stretch run. Nehemiah did a great job for us today. He has really begun to step it up at the right time.”
The Racers will travel to Ole Miss Sunday for a shoulder-to-shoulder match against the Rebels.
“We're looking forward to the chance to go on the road and compete against a tough opponent,” Lollar said. “You only get better if you test yourself against the best.”
