Racers Sweep Eastern Kentucky on Homecoming

The Murray State volleyball team kept good news for the day going, with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-19) win over Eastern Kentucky at Racer Arena, as part of the 2011 Homecoming festivities.

The Racers (5-17, 5-6 OVC) were led by freshman Beth Mahurin, who tallied a career-best 10 kills. The Rockville, Ind., native also garnered a .333 (10k-2e-24ta) hitting percentage. Junior Lia Havili garnered her 10th double-double of the season, with 11 digs and 34 assists.
In the first set, MSU jumped out to an early 10-5 advantage with several small runs. The Colonels (11-11, 6-5 OVC) pushed back late in the set, with a 5-1 run that cut the lead to two (18-16). The Racers then fought back and finished the set with a 3-0 run to earn the 25-18 win.
The second set again saw MSU jump out to an early lead (3-1). The Racers increased the lead to eight (13-5) with a 5-0 run and, despite a 6-1 run by EKU, kept the momentum going throughout the set and earned the 25-17 win heading into the intermission.
After the break, the Colonels came out fighting in the third set. EKU gained a 10-7 lead with two 3-0 runs. The Colonels were ahead 17-15 when a 6-1 run by the Racers gave them the advantage back (21-18). After a point for EKU, MSU finished the set and match with a 4-0 run to earn the 25-19 win.
The Racers earned advantages in all the statistical categories on the box score, except blocking that EKU had a four to three lead in. MSU out-hit the Colonels .245 (40k-16e-98ta) to .071 (21k-23e-113ta) and had a 49-38 advantage in digs. The Racers also tallied a season-best five service aces to EKU's one.
MSU will now have a week off before they travel to face Jacksonville State (Oct. 21) and Tennessee Tech (Oct. 22) in the first matches of the second half of Ohio Valley Conference action.
