Box Score
The Racers (5-18, 5-7 OVC) were led by junior Cassy Woolverton, who tallied 16 kills and hit .270 (16k-6e-37ta). Freshman Beth Mahurin added 10 kills, for the second match in-a-row, while senior Teresa Krog also added 10. Defensively, senior Kayleah Sauer led the team with 14 digs. Sauer is now just 111 digs from claiming the No. 1 spot on the MSU all-time digs list. She is also just the seventh player in OVC history to record over 2,000 digs in her career, with 2,025.
JSU opened the first set with several small runs that gave them an 8-4 advantage. The Racers then started a come-back and went on a 6-1 run that gave them a 10-0 lead. The teams then traded runs and serves for the next few points before a 2-0 Gamecock run gave them a 19-17 advantage. The lead would be all they would need to take the set, 25-20.
MSU opened the second set with a 3-1 run, but the Gamecocks (7-16, 5-8 OVC) quickly recovered, with an 8-2 run that gave them the lead for the rest of the set. The Racers cut the disadvantage to one (9-10), but another 7-1 run pushed JSU further ahead. The Gamecocks kept the momentum up and took the set, 25-14.
The third set was close at the beginning with four tie scores before JSU took an 8-5 lead. However, the Racers would not back down and used a 9-2 run to regain a 15-11 lead. The teams traded the next four serves before the Gamecocks pushed back to take the lead back briefly (21-20). MSU was not done fighting and used a 5-1 run to finish the set for the 25-22 win.
The Racers took an early 5-2 lead in the fourth set and held onto the advantage until a 6-1 run by the Gamecocks pushed them ahead 13-11. MSU fought back with a 5-0 run to take a 17-14 lead, but JSU countered with a 5-1 run to take the lead again. The teams traded serves and knotted the score until a 3-0 run by JSU broke a 21-all tie and helped them earn the 25-22 win.
The Gamecocks earned key advantages in the box score in blocks (14-4), hitting percentage (.391-.183) and digs (63-49).
The Racers will return to action, Saturday, October 22 in Cookeville, Tenn., where they will battle with Tennessee Tech at 2 p.m. in the Eblen Center.
