Murray State soccer took an early lead Sunday afternoon, but conceded a pair of successfully-completed penalty kicks in the final 12 minutes to Austin Peay as the Racers dropped a 2-1 decision in Ohio Valley Conference action at Cutchin Field.
Freshman Julie Mooney scored her third goal of the season in the sixth minute as the Racers worked to reverse field position to attack from the right side. Erin Smith found Jenelle Cunningham with a pass in the center of the field and Cunningham proceeded to find an open Mooney outside the box on the right side. She was able to dribble in through the box unopposed and launched a hard shot low to the ground into the left bottom corner of the net at 5:02. The goal was the earliest in a game for Murray State all season.
The Racers were able to shut down an Austin Peay attack that entered the game as the highest scoring in the OVC, averaging 3.18 goals per game. MSU goalkeeper Lauren Kelly made her best save of the game in the early minutes of the second half. Down on the ground scrambling after a loose ball in the six-yard box, was able to recover and block Joceline Quiceno's attempt at a wide-open net.
The Lady Gov's first penalty kick came after the Racers committed a foul inside the 18-yard box in the AP attack zone. Tatiana Ariza scored her league-leading 12th goal of the year in scoring to tie the game at 1-1.
Austin Peay's second PK of the afternoon came with under a minute remaining in the match as Emily Perkins was tripped up from behind at the top of the box on a breakaway. Ariza converted for the second time of the day for her second goal of the game and give the Lady Govs a 2-1 win.
Murray State is off the next week, returning to action in its final non-conference game of the season against Alabama A&M Monday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
