Racers Drop 3-1 Decision at Tennessee Tech

The Murray State volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 25-27) to Tennessee Tech in the Eblen Center in Cookeville, Tenn., in Ohio Valley Conference action.

The Racers (5-19, 5-7 OVC) were led by junior Cassy Woolverton with 13 kills, with senior Teresa Krog adding 10. Junior Lia Havili added her 11th double-double of the season, with 39 assists and 11 digs, while senior Kayleah Sauer led the team with 22 digs.
The teams battled through the first half of the opening set before any team was able to pull away with more than a one point advantage. The Racers were the first to make a push, with a 6-0 run that gave them a 17-12 lead. MSU followed with a 4-0 run to solidify the lead (21-13) and kept the momentum going to earn the 25-17 win.
In the second set the close battle returned at the beginning of the set, with the team combining for seven tie scores. However, this time it was the Golden Eagles (4-19, 3-11 OVC) who went on two 3-0 runs that gave them a 16-12 advantage that they held onto the rest of the set. TTU kept the momentum going and tied the match at one-set a piece with a 25-19 win.
The third set was close all the way through, with 12 tie scores and seven lead changes before a winner could be decided. MSU was up 22-20 when the Golden Eagles pushed the tempo of the set and went on a 4-0 run that gave them a 24-22 lead. The Racers held off one set point, but fell 25-23.
The fourth set was close at the beginning, but the Racers pulled ahead with a 7-1 run (18-13). The teams traded points for most of the rest of the set, before the Golden Eagles fought back. MSU was ahead 23-17 when TTU used a 7-1 run to tie the set at 24 and force extra points. The Golden Eagles then pushed through with a 3-1 run to earn the 27-25 win.
The Racers earned an advantage in the digs column (67-56), but were out-blocked 16-5.
MSU returns home to host Southeast Missouri, Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Racer Arena at 7 p.m. The Racers will also play host to UT Martin, Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m.
Notes: Freshman Kelsey Van Oss saw her second action of the season…Van Oss hit .667 (2k-0e-3ta)…Sauer now has 2,047 career digs and is just 79 away from Heather Norris' record of 2,125.
