Racers Pick Up 3-1 Win Over SIU Edwardsville at Racer Arena

The Murray State volleyball team broke a two-match losing streak, with a 3-1 (23-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-22) win over SIU Edwardsville in Racer Arena.

The Racers (4-14, 4-3 OVC) were led by sophomore Casey Bucher. The Leopold, Mo., native tallied her first career double-double, with a career-best 11 kills and a season-best 10 digs. Bucher also hit a career-high .450 (11k-2e-20ta), added three assists and two blocks. Sophomore Wendi Zickfield paced the team with a career-best 21 kills and a .302 (21k-8e-43ta) hitting percentage. Senior Teresa Krog and junior Cassy Woolverton each added 15 kills each.
Junior Lia Havili recorded her seventh double-double of the year, with 57 assists and 14 digs. Sophomore Katlyn Hudson led the defense, with a career-best 31 digs.
MSU started out the first set with a 3-0 run and then pushed ahead to an 11-6 advantage with a few small runs. The Racers lead was extended to six (19-13), before the Cougars (7-13, 2-6 OVC) went on a 9-0 run that gave them a 22-19 advantage. MSU fought back with a 3-0 run to tie the set at 22, but SIUE went on a final 3-0 run to earn the 25-23 win.
The teams then had a tight battle through set two, with 17 tie scores and eight lead changes. With the score tied at 18, the Racers used a 3-0 run to take a 21-18 advantage. The Cougars followed with a 3-0 run of their own to tie the set at 22 again. The teams battled through to force extra points in the set, and after being down 24-25, MSU used two kills from Zickfield and a final kill by Krog to earn the 27-25 win.
After the intermission, MSU came out in set three and took an early 6-3 lead. The Racers then pushed their advantage to 10 (17-7) with a 10-2 run. However, the Cougars would not go quietly and late in the set went on an 8-1 run to cut the advantage to two (23-21). MSU kept fighting and eventually earned the 25-22 win.
The final set was much like the third. The Racers took an 11-5 lead and despite trading runs and points were ahead 19-13 before SIUE went on another late push. The Cougars again cut the lead to just two (22-20), with a 5-0 run. MSU didn't give up and went on a 3-2 run to end the set with a 25-22 win.
After a .095 hitting percentage in set one, the Racers battled through the rest of the match for a .233 (68k-28e-172ta) hitting percentage for the match. The Cougars were held to a .188 (56k-23e-176ta) percentage. MSU also held a large advantage in the digs column, 89-64. SIUE earned a lead in blocking, 10.5 to five.
The Racers will be in action again this weekend, with road matches at Tennessee State (Oct. 7) and Austin Peay (Oct. 8).
