The first set was a tight battle with 13 tie scores and four lead changes. The Racers took an early 13-10 lead, but a 4-0 run by the Tigers (9-6, 5-3 OVC) gave them a 17-14 advantage. MSU fought back to re-gain a 19-18 lead and the teams then traded points until a 2-0 run, with the score tied at 22, gave the Racers the needed momentum to earn the 25-23 win.
The second set was all TSU, as they started the set with a 3-0 run and never allowed MSU to get closer than two points the rest of the set on their way to a 25-16 win.
The Tigers again pulled out to an early lead in set three, pushing their lead to five (14-9) before a 4-0 run by the Racers cut the advantage to one point (14-13). The teams then traded runs and points before MSU pulled together another 4-0 run to take the lead (21-19). TSU followed with a 4-0 run of its own to regain the advantage. The Racers went on a 2-0 run to tie the set at 23, but the Tigers followed with a 2-0 run to earn the 25-23 win.
Before either team was able to get double-digits on the scoreboard in set three, the teams battled through five tie scores. The Tigers were the first team to pull away, with a 3-0 run that gave them an 11-8 lead. The Racers cut the advantage to two points (11-13), but could not get any closer as the teams again resumed the battle with long rallies for points. TSU kept the pressure up and used a final 7-2 run to earn the 25-17 win.
MSU's lone advantage on the score sheet came in the digs column, where they earned a 78-74 lead. However they were out-hit (.139/.246), out-blocks (6/2) and out-served (7/1 service aces).
