Racers Drop 3-0 Decision at Austin Peay

The Murray State volleyball team fell to Austin Peay, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 43-41) at the Dunn Center in Clarksville, Tenn. in an extra long match.

The Racers (4-16, 4-5 OVC) were led by senior Teresa Krog, who tallied 18 kills and added career-best three blocks (2-1). Junior Cassy Woolverton added 12 kills. Senior Kayleah Sauer led a trio of MSU players with 10-or-more digs. Sauer tallied 20, while junior Lia Havili added 16 and sophomores Wendi Zickfield and Katlyn Hudson each tallied 12. Havili tallied her ninth double-double of the season, with 45 assists to go with her 16 digs.
The Lady Govs (5-15, 3-7 OVC) took control of the first set early, with an 8-1 run that gave them a 10-3 lead. The Racers were unable to get much momentum going in the set and fell to APSU 25-15.
The teams traded serves through the first five points before a 5-1 run by MSU gave them a 10-8 advantage. The Racers held onto the lead and increased it to three (16-13) before the Lady Govs went on a 7-1 run that gave them the lead (20-17) for good. MSU made a final push, with a 2-0 run, but APSU earned the 25-21 win.
Set three was a close battle all the way through with 27 tie scores and 10 lead changes. After the Lady Govs took a 15-13 lead, the Racers started to push and went on an 8-2 run that gave them a 23-19 advantage. However, APSU didn't give up and used a 4-0 run to tie the set at 24 and force extra points. The teams traded the next 33 serves before a final 2-0 run by the Lady Govs gave them the set and match win, 43-41.
The 43-41 score was just shy of an NCAA record for the most points scored in a single set. The record is 45-43 set by Manhattan vs. Rider, Oct. 23, 2009.
For the second match in a row, the Racers earned an advantage in the digs column (80-78). The match also set two new top-five marks for three-set matches. MSU tallied 169 total attacks, which is the fourth most in MSU history in a three-set match. The Racers also tallied a season-best 12 blocks, which ranks No. 5 in total blocks in a three-set match.
Notes: Set three was the longest set of the season for the Racers and the longest in team history, with 25-point scoring…MSU had the opportunity to win the set 14 times and APSU converted on their ninth set point.
