Racers Finish the 2011 Season Against Austin Peay

The Murray State volleyball team finished the 2011 season with its annual Senior Day at Racer Arena, falling to Austin Peay, 3-0 (16-25, 21-25, 21-25). The Racers (8-23, 8-12 OVC) concluded their season with the loss, finishing eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference standings.

MSU was led by its quartet of seniors. Cassy Woolverton led the team with nine kills and two blocks; Teresa Krog added seven kills and three digs; Mary Cunningham garnered six kills, three digs and two blocks; and Kayleah Sauer added a team-high 17 digs.
The 17 digs by Sauer added to her career total and Racers Digs Record. The Louisville, Ky., native finished her career with 2,165 digs. Fellow senior Cunningham was also on a top-10 list for career totals at MSU. The St. Charles, Mo., native finished her career ranked No. 7 on the career block assist charts with 165.
The Racers started the first set with a lot of energy and took an early 4-0 lead. However, a 9-1 run a few serves later gave the Lady Govs a 10-6 advantage that they never relinquished. APSU kept pushing the tempo of the set with several run and earned the 25-16 win.
Set two was tight at the start with MSU again earning an early 11-7 lead. The Racers increases the lead to 14-11 before a 6-1 run gave the Lady Govs the advantage. The teams then battled to a 21-all tie, but APSU went on a 4-0 run to earn the 25-21 win.
Again in the third set the Racers jumped out to an early lead, this time 11-7. APSU followed immediately with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 11 and the teams again traded points, forcing 10 ties throughout the set. MSU earned an 18-16 lead, with a 2-0 run, but the Lady Govs countered with a 5-0 run to take the lead for good and took the set 25-21.
The Racers finished the match with a 63-48 lead in digs, but had key deficits in service aces (8-1) and blocks (7-4).
Notes: Sophomore Wendi Zickfield tallied eighth kills and 13 digs for the Racers…freshman Beth Mahurin added seven kills.
