The Murray State women's basketball team opens the 2011-12 campaign in the CFSB Center, Friday, Nov. 11 at 5:15 p.m. against Evansville. The game marks both the season and home opener for the Racers and is the second-straight season that MSU has opened the season at home.
Scouting Evansville
The Purple Aces finished the 2010-11 campaign with an 8-22 overall record and were ninth in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 3-15 mark. The Purple Aces hosted one exhibition game to start the 2011-12 season, defeating Oakland City, 78-41.
Evansville returns 11-of-12 members from last year's squad, 4-of-5 starters and has a new coaching staff for 2011-12.
The top returners for the Purple Aces are Samantha Heck and Briyana Blair. Heck averaged 9.3 points and a team-best 4.9 rebounds per game, while shooting .402 (113-281) from the field and .319 (15-47) from beyond the arc. Heck was perfect shooting during the exhibition game. She went 7-for-7 from the field, 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. She also added nine rebounds, one assist, one block and two steals.
Blair led the team in scoring in 2010-11, with 9.5 points per game and added 4.6 rebounds per game. She shot .323 (95-294) from the field and added 86 assists and 71 steals.
Evansville shot .360 (588-1635) from the field and .300 (166-553) from the three-point line in 2010-11, but shot .519 (28-54) from the field and .412 (7-17) from beyond the arc during their exhibition this season. Last year they allowed their opponents to shoot .426 (726-1706) from the field and .320 (145-453) from three-point range. The Purple Aces were also out-rebounded 33.0 to 40.4 in 2010-11.
Against the Purple Aces
From last year's meeting, the Racers return two players who tallied double-digit point totals. Then-junior Kayla Lowe tallied a double-double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while then-sophomore Mariah Robinson contributed 12 points and six rebounds.
Evansville returns three key players from their victory, with Chelsea Falkenstein garnering 16 points and six rebounds, Samantha Heck adding nine points and 10 boards and Briyana Blair tallying 12 points and five rebounds.
MSU earned the rebounding advantage (49-42), but was out-shot .286 to .339. Free throws also played a key role in the outcome, with the Racers connecting on 16-of-20 attempts and the Purple Aces hitting 19-of-30.
The Series
Friday's game will be the 28th meeting in the all-time series between the Racers and the Purple Aces, with MSU holding a 16-11 lead in the series. The Racers are also 9-4 when playing in Murray, Ky., and won the last meeting at the CFSB Center (Nov. 21, 2009 - W, 85-77). However, Evansville was the victor in the last meeting (Nov. 17, 2010 - L, 54-60) in Evansville, Ind. This is the first game of the home-and-home series between the two teams for the 2011-12 season, with MSU traveling to play in the new Ford Center, Dec. 10.
Preseason Honors
Junior Mariah Robinson and sophomore Jessica Winfrey both earned double preseason honors for the Racers, being named to the Preseason All-OVC and College Sports Madness Preseason teams.
Robinson was an All-OVC Second Team pick in 2010-11 after leading the Racers with 17.9 points per game in conference action. The Beaver Dam, Ky., native also added 5.9 rebounds per game, a team-best 74 assists and 46 steals. The 5-9 guard shot .376 from the field, .338 from beyond the arc and .828 from the charity stripe.
Winfrey was a stable force across the court for MSU in 2010-11, earning OVC All-Newcomer honors. The Marion, Ark., native averaged 10.6 points and a team-best 9.7 boards per game. The 5-10 forward added a .432 shooting percentage, 23 assists, 26 steals and 11 blocks.
Racers Starting the Season
MSU is 20-19 all-time in home openers. This will mark the fifth time in the Racers' 47-year history that they have played their first home game against the Purple Aces. Evansville holds a 3-1 record in those meetings. In season openers the Racers are 17-27.
Jessica's Missing for the Season
Both of the Racers players named Jessica, Jessica Winfrey and Jessica Holder, will miss the 2011-12 campaign due to injury. Winfrey was a key starter for the Racers last year, while Holder was sidelined for most of the 2010-11 campaign due to injury as well.
National Attendance
Murray State women's basketball was ranked No. 27 in the NCAA DI last season for home attendance. The Racers played 14 games at the CFSB Center and totaled 52,617 in attendance for an average of 3,758 fans per game. MSU was the only team in the OVC to break the top-50, with the OVC ranking 10th among DI conferences with an average of 1,268 fans per home game. The conference had a total attendance of 171,162, which was a conference record.
