BOX SCORE
Four Murray State errors helped lead to five unearned runs as UNC Asheville rallied for a 7-6 victory Sunday afternoon in the final game of a three-game series at Greenwood Field.
With the scored tied in the bottom of the seventh, Danny Baatz singled up the middle and stole second. After a wild pitch, Grant Gajdosz delivered a single to left field that drove in the winning run.
The Breds (0-3) took advantage of a fielding error in the second inning to push across four runs in the frame. Jacob Rhodes grounder to second to start the inning kicked off the glove into the right-field corner for a three-base error. Cody Larson was hit by a pitch and Colton Moore drove in a run with a fielder's choice. Paul Ritzheimer singled to center and Elliot Frey was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wes Warren drew a bases-loaded walk to score a run and Travis Isaak followed with an RBI infield single to second. A second run scored on the play when the ball was thrown into the dugout.
The Bulldogs (3-0) got an unearned run back in the home-half of the inning as Gajdosz doubled to left center after his at-bat was prolonged by a dropped foul ball by the catcher. Mike Vaughn plated the runner with a groundout to second two batters later.
MSU added to lead in the fourth as Moore was hit by a pitch and went to second on Frey's single up the middle. Warren followed with a chopper out in front of the plate that was thrown to second and mishandled, allowing Moore to score from second. Isaak followed with an RBI single through the left side.
Things came unraveled for the Breds defense in the sixth as they committed three errors that helped push five runs across and tie the game. With runners on the corners and one out, a grounder to third was thrown into right field, allowing a run to score. Another fielding error, followed by an RBI double. A run-scoring groundout and a wild pitch helped tie the game.
Tommy Houmard (1-0) earned the victory in relief as he allowed just one hit over four innings. Cameron Finch (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs, one earned on four hits over 2.2 innings.
