MSU Qualifies for 28th NCAA Rifle Championship

Hosted by Columbus State University, the championships are contested at the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center on the Columbus State campus and the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning.
“We started the year with this as a goal,” MSU Head Coach Allan Lollar said. “It's pretty simple; we wanted to be competing on the last day of the season.”
With an appearance this season, MSU has qualified for 28 of the 32 NCAA Rifle championships. MSU has won two national titles (1985, 1987) and has seven individual NCAA champions in their history.
“I'm proud of what we have accomplished,” Lollar stated. ”We took last week easy, catching up on school work. Now we are back into a familiar routine, training the way we do every day. We're looking forward to the opportunity. It's a big challenge. It's what we signed up for.”
The other seven teams in the NCAA Rifle Championship include: Alaska Fairbanks, Jacksonville State, Kentucky, Texas Christian, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy and West Virginia.
The Racers, who qualified fourth for the championship event, have had an outstanding 2010-11 season where MSU won their second straight Ohio Valley Conference championship (10th overall). MSU was 10-4 this season with four first-place finishes in multi-team matches and one second-place finish. Those four loses were against defending national champion TCU twice, this years' top ranked team West Virginia and third ranked Kentucky. MSU also set team scoring records in smallbore, air rifle and aggregate scores.
Individually, The Racers won many awards including Kaitlin Cleven as OVC Air Rifle Athlete of the Year, while Kyle Donnan, Emily Quiner and Ashley Rose were named to the OVC Smallbore First Team with Cleven and Nehemiah Gillman named to the OVC Air Rifle First Team. Gillman was also named to the OVC Newcomer Team.
For a second straight season and 28th overall, the Murray State Rifle program has earned a spot in the eight-team NCAA Championship.
This year's NCAA event is March 11-12 in Columbus, Ga.
