Senior goes 6-for-6 with a grand slam and 7 RBIs
Murray State senior Zach Noonan had a day he will never forget, as he went 6-for-6 with three doubles, a home run and seven RBIs as the Breds handed North Dakota State a 17-7 run-rule defeat Friday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Noonan's six-hit effort ties the school record that was set by fellow teammate Elliot Frey at Morehead State on April 25, 2009. The seven RBIs also is a new career-best Noonan, besting his old mark of six against Southeast Missouri on April 10, 2009.
The Breds (3-6) got on the board in the first inning as Noonan started the inning with a single through the left side. Ty Stetson followed with a grounder to second that was misplayed, allowing both runners to be safe. After a sacrifice bunt from Travis Isaak, Jacob Rhodes plated a run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Brandon Eggenschwiler followed with a single to center field that scored Stetson from second.
MSU added to the lead in the second with Wes Warren and Cody Larson starting the frame with back-to-back singles. Frey advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Noonan plated a run with a double to right center. Stetson drove in two more runs with a single into the gap in right center.
The Bison (0-8) got on the board in the third as Nick Colwell singled to left and went to second on a wild pitch. Zach Wentz drove in Colwell with a double to left field.
The Breds added to the lead in a big way in the third as Paul Ritzheimer, Warren and Frey walked to load the bases. Noonan made the Bison pay by hitting a grand slam off the scoreboard in left center.
NDSU pushed across a pair of runs in the fourth as Wes Satzinger hit a solo home run to left field. A pair of hits and a hit batter loaded the bases before a wild pitch scored the runner from third.
MSU scored for the fourth-straight inning as Eggenschwiler singled through the right side and Ritzheimer walked. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up for Frey to deliver a two-run double to right center. Noonan followed with a cue shot to first base that took a bad bounce and resulted in an RBI double.
The Bison continued climb back into the game in the sixth as they started a two-out rally that resulted in RBI hits from Tanner Adam, Wentz and Tyler Steen.
The Breds got back to their scoring ways in the seventh with Noonan starting the inning with a double just inside the bag at third, and scoring on Stetson's double off the base of the fence in left field. Isaak cleared the bases with a two-run shot off the scoreboard in left center.
NDSU pushed across an unearned run in the eighth as a hit and a pair of errors put runners on the corners. Satzinger drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field, but Mark Roberts was able to minimize the damage as he got the next batter to hit into the inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
MSU put the game away in the eighth as Warren walked and later scored on Frey's triple to left center with one out. Noonan ended the game with a line-drive single to center.
Noonan was not the only Bred to have a big day as Stetson went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Travis Isaak went 2-for-4 with a double and his first career home run, while Frey added three RBIs on a pair of hits.
Luke Shuemaker (2-1) picked up the victory after allowing six runs on 12 hits and seven strikeouts over six innings. Roberts allowed one unearned run on four hits and two strikeouts in his two innings of work. Kyle Kingsley (0-3) took the loss after surrendering five runs, three earned, on six hits over two innings.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at noon.
