Meghan Sims cleared the bases in the top of the eighth inning, scoring three and leading Murray State to a 7-2 win over Iowa in eight innings in the final day of the DeMarini Invitational Sunday morning in Fullerton, Calif.
The Racers (3-8) had already scored one in the inning as Megan Glosser, placed on second with the international tiebreak rule in effect, scored on a bases-loaded single to put MSU one with one out. After Stephanie Mattocks was forced out at home on a ground ball to short, Sims drove a 3-2 pitch deep to right center to score Stephanie Edwards, Leslie Bridges and Lauren Buch to give Murray State a commanding 6-2 lead. Lauren Buch added a fifth run in the eighth with a ball off the wall in straightaway center.
Trailing 1-0 after an Iowa (8-9) run in the first inning, Edwards tied the game with a strong triple to right that got past a diving Iowa defender. She was able to score when the Hawkeyes failed to cut off the throw to the infield to tie the contest at 1-1.
Taylor Wilson broke the stalemate two batters later, driving her first home run of the season inside the left field foul pole to give MSU a 2-1 lead in the fifth.
Shelby Kosmecki earned her first win of the season, throwing all eight innings and allowing just four hits and two walks.
Murray State returns to action Mar. 12 at 1 p.m. to open OVC play at UT Martin.
