BOX SCORE
A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the difference as WKU walked away with a 3-2 victory over Murray State Wednesday evening at Nick Denes Field. The Breds had their chances as they stranded seven runners in scoring position.
The Hilltoppers (22-12) took advantage of a base on balls to score in the first inning as Jared Andreoli drew the four-pitch walk and stole second. Matt Rice drove in the runner with a single through the right side.
A leadoff hit by pitch in the third helped WKU push across another run. A bunt base hit followed the hit batter, but a 6-4-3 double play nearly got MSU out of the inning. Kes Carter made sure the run scored with a single through the left side.
The Breds (13-18) got one run back in the fourth as Jacob Rhodes hit a towering solo home run to right field, his second of the season.
MSU tied the game in the sixth as Brandon Eggenschwiler singled up the middle with one out and went to second on a wild pitch. After a balk moved him to third, Zach Noonan delivered an RBI double to left field.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when WKU got a pair of hits and a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out. A groundout to first kept the runners on base and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Carter took four-straight pitches to plate the run with a base on balls.
MSU mounted a rally in the top of the ninth as Ty Stetson and Wes Warren singled with one out. After a walk to Travis Isaak, Rhodes' ball up the middle was turned into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Luke Shuemaker (2-4) was tabbed with the loss after allowing three runs on nine hits over eight innings. GJ Strauss (2-0) earned the victory in relief after allowing one run on three hits and three strikeouts over two innings. Phil Wetherell (4) earned the save after allowing two hits over 1.1 innings.
Stetson, Brandon Elliott, Rhodes and Noonan each collected two hits as the Breds outhit the Toppers 11-9
The Breds return to the diamond Saturday afternoon as they open a three-game non-conference series against SIU Edwardsville. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
