SIU Edwardsville used three big innings to hand Murray State a 17-7 loss in the first game of three game series Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Cougars (13-19) got on the board in the third inning as James Vazquez singled to center and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Mitch Matecki followed with a fly ball to deep center that allowed the runner to score from second.
SIUE broke the game wide open in the fifth inning as they sent 11 hitters to plate and pushed across seven runs in the inning. Zach Hawkins and Joel Greatting delivered the big blows as they drove in two runs each with a single and double, respectively.
The Breds (13-19) responded with a five-run inning of their own in the home half of the fifth. Paul Ritzheimer started the inning with a single to left center and took center on an error by the left fielder. Zach Noonan followed with a single to shortstop, before Cody Larson hit a grounder to short that was dropped by the shortstop running over to touch second. With one out, Ty Stetson delivered an RBI single to right field, ahead of Elliot Frey bases-clearing triple to center field. Travis Isaak plated Frey with a groundout to the right side.
The Cougars pushed the lead back to seven runs by getting an RBI single from Greatting and a two-run single off the bat of Mike Swinnen.
After SIUE pushed four more runs across in the top of the seventh, the Breds came back in the bottom of the inning with Wes Warren getting a one-out single and went to third on Frey's double to left field. Isaak drove in both runners with a double down the left-field line.
Bryan Babin (2-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits over four innings. Josh Malin (3-2) earned the victory after allowing seven runs, five earned, on nine hits and five strikeouts over 6.2 innings.
