Women’s Tennis Falls in Tight Match to Austin Peay in OVC Championship

“We have had tremendous senior leadership throughout the year and this is not the way that we wanted the season to end,” said head coach Connie Keasling. “Playing indoors we did the best that we could to keep the ball away from a good ball striking team. Austin Peay has four players who are good ball strikers and we were not able to execute the game style necessary to win the match.”
The Racers finish the season with a 10-13 record and placed third in the regular-season in the OVC standings with a 5-3 mark.
“This was a season where anyone in the conference could win on any given day and having strong senior leadership makes a difference,” Keasling added. “I was proud of the way that the team and especially the seniors fought through to the end.”
MSU started the match up 1-0 as the Lady Govs defaulted at No. 6 singles. APSU then tied the match at 1-1 after earning the doubles point. The teams then traded points and went into the final singles match tied at three.
Freshman Carla Suga was the first to earn a point for the Racers in singles matches, defeating Brittany Hays 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Senior Alexis Webb then earned the third point for MSU with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Andra Cornea.
The final point came down to No. 4 singles where senior Lindsey Wiseman battled to a 7-6 (4) win in the first set and then fell 7-5 and 6-1 in the final two sets.
Following the match Webb and sophomore Ashley Canty received their All-OVC medals. Webb earned All-OVC Second Team honors, finishing the season with a 13-8 overall singles record (7-1OVC) and a 6-6 mark in doubles play. Canty was named to the All-OVC First Team after going 11-12 overall in singles action this season (5-3 OVC) and 8-14 in doubles.
