BOX SCORE
SIU Edwardsville's Devin Caldwell hit a two-run double into the gap in left center with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to give the Cougars a 4-2 extra-inning victory in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
With one out in the eighth, James Vazquez and Travis Becherer hit back-to-back singles. After a flyout, Caldwell hit the ball into left center that tipped off the glove of a diving Elliot Frey to score the game-winning runs.
The Cougars (14-19) got on the board in the first inning after Vazquez was hit by a pitch to leadoff the game and came around to score on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Caldwell.
The Breds (13-20) tied the game in the fourth as Travis Isaak double to fence in left field to start the inning. With one out, Colton Moore hit a grounder to short that was thrown away trying to get the runner at third, allowing him to score the tieing run.
A fluke play in the fifth inning helped SIUE take a one-run lead. The craziness started with a runner on third and two outs as Becherer hit a slow roller to second, and as he went to flip the ball to pitcher covering, he dropped the ball and the pitcher fell on the ball with his foot on the bag. The umpire ruled that the runner was safe, but he rounded the bag and was thrown out heading to second.
MSU tied the game in the bottom of the seventh as Cody Larson beat out an infield single with one out. Bryan Babin came in as a pinch runner and went to second on a wild pitch. Wes Warren singled to center to put runners on the corners and Ty Stetson followed with a sacrifice fly in foul territory down the left-field line.
Jake Donze (5-2) was the tough-luck loser after allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits over 7.2 innings. Spencer Patton (5-2) picked up the victory after allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits over seven innings. Thad Hawkins (3) earned the save after retiring all three hitters he faced in the eighth.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1p.m. at Reagan Field.
