Racers Drop Season Opener at Belmont

The Racers (0-1) were led by sophomore Wendi Zickfield and junior Lia Havili. Zickfield tallied a team-high .389 (7k-0e-18ta) hitting percentage and added nine digs. Havili garnered 22 assists, four digs and four kills, with a .375 (4k-1e-8ta) hitting percentage.
The Bruins earned the win in set one, 25-19. The teams traded the first two serves before Belmont went on a 6-0 run to give them the lead for most of the set. The Racers fought back with an 8-1 run, including a 5-0 mark in the middle of the set to tie the score at 11, but the Bruins then went on a 3-0 run of their own to take the lead for good.
Belmont opened the second set with a 3-0 run and never allowed MSU to get closer than two points the rest of the set. The Bruins used several small runs throughout the set to earn a 25-11 win.
The Racers took their first lead of the match early in set three, going on a 5-1 run to take a 5-2 advantage. However, the Bruins followed with a 3-0 run of their own tie the score at five. The teams then traded the next two serves before another Belmont 3-0 run gave the Bruins the lead for good. Belmont went on to win the set 25-19.
The Bruins held advantages in all statistical categories, with the biggest advantages coming in hitting percentage (.330/.093), blocking (5.0/1.0) and service aces (9/1).
The Racers will continue the 2011 season, Saturday, August 27 with two matches in the Belmont Invitational. MSU will first take on Sacramento State (10 a.m.) and then battle with Western Kentucky (3:30 p.m.).
Notes: The match was the first start for senior Kayleah Sauer since her freshman campaign (2008)…Sauer has played libero for most of her career.
