Racers Earn 3-1 Victory at Eastern Illinois

The Racers (2-11, 2-0 OVC) were led by senior Teresa Krog, who tallied 13 kills and a .270 (13k-3e-37ta) hitting percentage and added seven digs. Sophomore Wendi Zickfield added a .375 (10k-1e-24ta) hitting percentage and her third double-double of the season and second-straight, with 10 digs. Junior Lia Havili also added a double-double with 35 assists and 12 digs.
The first set started out close, with three tie scores before the Racers went on an 8-1 run that gave them the lead for the rest of the set (15-9). MSU closed out the set by not allowing the Panthers to garner more than one point at a time and went on two more 4-0 and 3-0 runs to earn the 25-13 win.
The Racers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set and never let the Panthers cut the deficit to lower than two points. The teams traded runs throughout the set, with MSU building a seven-point advantage at one point. EIU kept fighting and with several short runs late in the set, and cut the deficit to two (23-21), but the Racers kept pushing and earned the 25-22 win.
The Panthers took the momentum that they had gained at the end of set two into the third set and opened up an 8-2 advantage early. EIU kept control of the set despite several runs by the Racers and earned the 25-17 win.
The Racers pushed ahead at the start of the third set, with a 3-0 run and never allowed the Panthers to get closer than one point the rest of the set. The score was 9-8, in favor of MSU, when the Racers mounted a 7-0 run that gave them control of the scoreboard for the rest of the match, on way to the 25-18 win.
As a team, MSU hit .214 (49k-18e-145ta) and allowed the Panthers to hit .145 (51k-28e-159ta). The Racers also earned a slight advantage in the digs column (68-63).
MSU will be in action again Tuesday, Sep. 20 when they face Southeast Missouri at Houck Fieldhouse at 6:30 p.m.
