Cross Country Opens Season At Memphis Twilight Classic
9/2/2011 11:57:00 AM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
The Murray State men's and women's cross country teams will be kicking off the 2011 schedule this weekend, traveling to Tennessee for the Memphis Twilight Classic. The night time event is hosted by Christian Brothers University with the women's 5k race set for 8:40 p.m., and the men's four mile race scheduled for 9:20 p.m.
On the women's side, the Racers return five runners from last season's squad, including seniors Kayla Crusham, Jami Kloenne and Bridget Stichnot. Head coach Jenny Severns sees her group of 11 ready to compete this weekend in the first event of the season.
"Everyone has looked really good, the returners came back more fit and ready to go than they did last season," Severns said. "They've been running faster in workouts than they ever have. Our freshman came in looking good. You never know what to expect when you get freshmen on campus for the first time but they all came in looking really strong."
The Racers are one of 26 teams competing in the women's event, and are the only Ohio Valley Conference member at the Twilight Classic.
"On the women's side, we want to see them run as a pack," Severns said. "We have a group of about eight runners that have been interchangeable in practice. The biggest thing is going to be working as a team and hopefully having that pack towards the front."
For the men, Jordan Althoff is the lone returner to this year's team of five. This weekend, they will be running their shortest event of the season at four miles instead of eight kilometers.
"For the men, its going to be getting them used to the 8k distance this season," Severns said. "This is a four mile event for them, so we're going to send them out, see how they handle it and set some goals after we see how it goes."
