The Murray State Racers were selected fifth in the College Rifle Coaches Association Pre-Season Poll that was released Wednesday.
The Racers enter the 2011-12 season having won the last two Ohio Valley Conference championships. MSU's 10th and 11th league titles led to good showings at the NCAA Championship with seventh place finish in 2010 and a fifth place finish last spring.
The Racers are ranked just behind fourth place Alaska-Fairbanks and Kentucky, Texas Christian and West Virginia who start the season ranked at the top, one through three. After the fifth-place Racers, Jacksonville State, Army, Mississippi , Air Force and Ohio State make up the top-10. Navy, Nebraska, UTEP, Nevada, Memphis, Colorado State, Akron, North Carolina State, UT Martin and Morehead State make up places 11 through 20.
“We're pleased to be ranked as high as we are, because it's a validation that we're doing things right,” MSU Head Coach Alan Lollar said. “However, we also realize the season is not about how you start, but how you finish.”
The Racers are led by last season's OVC Air Rifle Athlete of the Year, Kaitlin Cleven, who also earned NCAA First Team Air Rifle honors. All-OVC performers, Ashley Rose, Caroline Barber and Kyle Donnan also return to the MSU lineup.
Murray State begins the season with two road matches at UT Martin Saturday (Sep. 24) and at Mississippi (Oct. 1). The Racers' home opener is with Alaska-Fairbanks (Oct. 8) at the Pat Spurgin Range in Roy Stewart Stadium.
