Racers Head to OVC Championships on Saturday

The Racer men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Oxford, Ala., this weekend for the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championships. The races will be run at Oxford Lake Park and the meet is hosted by Jacksonville State.
The women's 5K race will kick things off at 9:15 a.m. with the men's 8K to follow at approximately 10. It is the 51st and 34th OVC championships for the men and women, respectively. Eastern Kentucky is the six-time defending champion on the men's side while Eastern Illinois is the defending women's champion. EKU however has won 25 of the previous 33 championship meets.
This will be the first year that 12 teams will compete. SIU Edwardsville is postseason eligible for the first time this year and Belmont is running its first season in the league.
The Murray State men are led by Lucas Prather and Jarred Koerner. Prather has led the Racers in all but one meet this season when Koerner paced MSU at the Fast Cats Invite two weekends ago. Prather's best 8K time this season came in September at the Commodore Classic when he ran a time of 27:11.87. Koerner's best time this season also came at the Commodore Classic, running a time of 27:51.32. Koerner ran a time of 28:20.8 at the Fast Cats Invite.
The Racer men have improved each meet this season but are extremely young with six freshman, three sophomores and no upperclassmen on this year's squad.
The MSU women are looking to improve upon their 5th-place finish at last year's championships. The Racers are led by freshman Abigail Ashbee-Simmonds who set the program record in the 6K at the Pre-NCAA meet two weeks ago running a time of 21:50.5.
Ashbee-Simmonds has led the Racer women in three of the four meets run this season. Carolyne Tanui paced Murray State at the Notre Dame Classic when she ran a PR in the 5K with a time of 17:59 and finished in 10th place. Murray State finished sixth as a team at Notre Dame. Ashbee-Simmonds' best 5K time also came at Notre Dame this season, she ran a time of 18:05 and finished 14th. Abbie Oliver and Rebecca Hbetamu are the next two top runners for the Racers, having run times of 18:38 and 18:45, respectively in the 5K this year.
