The Murray State soccer team lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision Friday afternoon to Eastern Kentucky at Cutchin Field. Cold, rain and wind made for sloppy conditions all game as it rained for most of the contest.
Hayley Wright's goal in the 72nd minute pushed the Colonels into the lead for good. The goal came off of a Murray State turnover deep in its own territory. The Racers had a couple of opportunities to score late in the contest but EKU goalkeeper Erika Wolfer made a couple of great saves and Bronagh Kerins' shot in the 89th minute hit off the post.
For the game, the Racers (4-12, 2-7 OVC) out-shot EKU 19-14 while collecting seven shots on goal. Racheal Foxley led MSU with two shots on goal, while Julie Mooney, Megg Hudson, Rachel Walker, Shauna Wicker and Jenelle Cunningham each had one shot on goal in the loss. Kerins and Veronika Pribyslavska each had three shots total in the match.
Latesha Stevenson got the start in goal for the Racers and had a great game in net, recording nine saves which tied a career-high for her. The loss officially eliminates the Racers from OVC Tournament contention.
Murray State will play its season finale on Sunday afternoon in a 1 o'clock kickoff. It will be Senior Day from Cutchin Field as the Racers will honor Cunningham, Ashley Fraser, Stephanie Gale, Gina Killion and Pribyslavska.
