Volleyball Swept At Tennessee State

The Murray State volleyball team took a three-set loss in OVC action to Tennessee State on Friday night in Nashville.
The Tigers (14-10, 8-3 OVC) jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the opening framed and established a momentum that never allowed the Racers to recover. Murray State (4-18, 2-10 OVC) did battle back and pull within four again at 9-5, but went on to drop the opener, 25-15.
In the second stanza, the two teams traded points back and forth for the entire set with the lead for either team never getting above two. Tennessee State was the first to 24 in the frame, but MSU dug in and forced the set to extra points. The Tigers would need four more set points before they finally put the scrappy Racers away, 28-26.
In set three, the Tigers opened up on a 9-1 run only to have Murray State fight back and pull within two at 19-17. Murray State stopped two set points by the Tigers in the final plays and forced Tennessee State to extra points for the second straight set. However, the Tigers capitalized on their next opportunity and clinched the match with a 26-24 set win.
Senior Wendi Zickfield was the only Racer to post double-digit kills in the match with 12, while classmate Lia Havili led the way in assists with 20. Zickfield also led the team in digs on the night with 13 for her first double-double of the season and seventh of her career.
On Friday, the Racers will return to the friendly confines of Racer Arena for a 7 p.m., OVC western division showdown with Southeast Missouri.
