Women’s Basketball Meets Local Press at Media Day

Head coach Rob Cross and members of the Murray State women's basketball team helped usher in the 2012-13 season on Wednesday as they met with members of the local media at the MSU Basketball media day at the CFSB Center.
Cross opened the press conference with comments about this year's edition of the team and then took questions from the media on a variety of topics. Following lunch, seniors Tessa Elkins, Candace Nevels, Mariah Robinson and Kyra Watson, as well as junior Erica Burgess got their opportunity to talk with reporters from all forms of media and give their perspective on the upcoming season.
'We finished the season fairly strong, but had a disappointing end in the semifinals against UT Martin,” said Cross. “Our team has carried that through, our newcomers, our freshmen, our junior college transfers are all really focused and they're excited about the opportunity they have to be successful right away. You can look at the freshmen and say you need to build toward the future, but the reality is, if we started tonight, we'd more than likely have two freshmen in the starting line-up. Those two have to play now and they have to help us if we have any chance of getting above that fourth place finish and really competing for a championship. Our freshmen and first-year transfers are really going to have to play a big role this season.”
This year's Racers will feature four of the five starters from last year's team, five other returning players, two transfers and four freshmen. One of the key players this season for the Racers this year will be Burgess. She is coming off her inaugural campaign with MSU last season when she averaged 16.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game and garnered All-OVC second team and OVC All-Newcomer honors. Earlier this month, she was named to this season's All-OVC preseason team.
Also ready to play a big role this season for Murray State is Robinson. She enters this season ranked 12th all-time in scoring, second in 3-point field goals made and second in 3-point field goals attempted. She needs just three attempts to become the all-time leader in that category and 37 made to be the leader in that category.
The Racers will officially kick-off their 2012-13 season on Friday, November 9 at 5;15 p.m., at the CFSB Center when they host Western Kentucky.
