It was a tale of two halves, however a big first half deficit was too much to overcome, as the Murray State women's basketball team fell to James Madison, 71-51, on Thursday night at the Convocation Center in Harrisonburg, Va…
Despite the Racers opening the game with an 8-4 lead, the Dukes (1-2) ended the half on a 40-13 run and took a 44-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Racers shot just 25.0 percent in the first half, while James Madison shot 48.7 percent.
However, in the second half, the Racers battled back and outscored the Dukes 30-27 in the frame. Murray State bumped its shooting percentage from 25.0 to 29.6 percent in the stanza and raised its free throw percentage from 62.5 to 70. The final free throw percentage of 70.8 (17-for-24) was a season-high for MSU and raised its season percentage to 69.6.
Senior Mariah Robison led the Racers for the second-straight game with 14 points, while fellow senior Kyra Watson led the team with six rebounds to go along with 13 points. Robinson went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe in the game and is currently 16-for-18 (88.9%) on the year.
Longwood is currently 1-2 on the season and are coming off of a crushing 102-49 defeat at North Carolina State on Thursday. Chelsea Coward was one the few bright spots in the game for Longwood as she scored 29 points and accounted for over half of the Lancers offensive production.
Coward currently leads Longwood in points and rebounds per game with 19.0 and 9.7, respectively. The Lancers are coming off a 7-22 campaign in 2011-12, a one win improvement in head coach Bill Renison's second season.
