The Murray State women's basketball team fell, 91-67, to a UT Martin team that is currently tied for the top position in the Ohio Valley Conference standings in the Racers (11-16, 7-7 OVC) final game at the CFSB Center for the 2011-12 season.
MSU was led in scoring by red-shirt sophomore Erica Burgess, who tallied 27 points and added four rebounds. The Racers also saw top performances from seniors Kayla Lowe and Mallory Schwab, who were playing their last games at home. The duo both tallied 14 points, with Lowe garnering four rebounds and Schwab adding three.
The Racers got on the scoreboard on their first possession, but it was the Skyhawks (18-8, 12-1 OVC) who went on the first run of the game. When UTM got on the scoreboard they went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-2 advantage. MSU countered with a 4-0 run to take a 6-5 lead, with 16:45 left to play. The Skyhawks then took control of the game with a 12-2 run over the next six minutes. Another 12-2 run late in the half pushed the lead out to double digits before UTM went to the locker room with a 46-28 lead.
The Racers played the game tighter in the second half, but were unable to cut the deficit to lower than 16 points throughout the stanza.
Three-point shooting was the key to the game, with UTM earning a clear advantage in the column. The Skyhawks made 14-of-27 triples to the Racers 7-of-30 mark.
MSU will finish the 2011-12 regular season on the road, with games at Tennessee State (Feb. 23) and Tennessee Tech (Feb. 25). The Racers will first travel to Nashville, Tenn., to battle with the Lady Tigers, Thursday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. at the Gentry Center.
