Racers Earn 5-2 Win Over Belmont at Bennie Purcell Courts

In the first outdoor match of the 2011-12 campaign, the Murray State women's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Belmont at Bennie Purcell Courts in Murray, Ky. The win over the Bruins is the third straight for the Racers, who will see Belmont as an Ohio Valley Conference opponent in 2012-13.
MSU took the doubles point, winning two of the three matches. Sophomore Carla Suga and freshman Carolyn Huerth first teamed to claim an 8-2 win over Fabiana Mersan and Catherine Holliday at No. 2 doubles. Senior Cassidy Cunitz and junior Ashley Canty then fell at No. 1 doubles (8-5) to Laura Stack and Abbey Hogan.
The point decision then came down to senior Ashley Pierson and freshman Jordana Klein at No. 3 doubles. The duo fought through to earn an 8-5 win over Carolyn Caire and Natalia Nunes to give the Racers the doubles point.
Cunitz and Canty then both rebounded in singles play to give MSU a 3-0 lead. Cunitz defeated Mersan, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Canty earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nikki Maciel at No. 2 singles.
Klein then secured the overall match victory for the Racers, with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Caire at No. 3 singles. Huerth then added the fifth point for MSU, with a come-from-behind win at No. 5 singles over Stack. Huerth fell in the first set (5-7) and then came back to win 6-2 in the second and 10-4 in the super tie-breaker.
MSU will return to Kenlake Tennis Center for a noon match, Sunday, Feb. 19 against Arkansas State.
