Softball Drops Hilltopper Spring Classic Opener to WKU

Murray State softball (2-1) lost its first game of the 2012 season Friday afternoon, dropping the opening game of the Hilltopper Spring Classic to host Western Kentucky 10-1 in five innings.

The Racers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on their lone run of the game. Mo Ramsey made it safely to first with one out on a ball booted by the WKU 3rd baseman. She advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches, and Alexa Becker drove her in on a line drive out to the left fielder.

The Hilltoppers responded in the bottom of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead on a bases-loaded double by Katrina Metoyer to the outfield fence that was pushed down the right field line by the persistant 20 mph winds that both teams faced all game. A single to right scored one more and WKU held a 3-1 lead through one.

Western Kentucky (7-3) added single runs in each of the second and fourth innings, collecting two hits in each frame. They closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five unearned runs to end the contest at 10-1.

Megan Glosser had the lone hit for MSU, and she also stole her third base in three games.

Shelby Kosmecki was the pitcher of record for the Racers, suffering her first loss of the season. CheyAnne Gaskey struck out five in relief.

The Racers continue play in Bowling Green, Ky., Saturday morning, playing in the first two games of the day. MSU meets Indiana State at 9 a.m. and Morehead State immediately after at 11 a.m.
