Women’s Tennis Earns 5-2 Win in First Road Match of the Season

The Murray State women's tennis team earned its second-straight and first road win of the season, with a 5-2 victory over Saint Louis and Kings Point in St. Louis, Mo.

“I am incredibly proud of this team and the tenacity we bring to every match,” said head coach Kara Amundson. “We are continuing to find ways to win matches against solid opponents. We competed against a great team today and are continuing to put pieces in place to fight for a championship come conference time.”

The Racers (4-3) started the match out by earning the doubles point. Senior Cassidy Cunitz and junior Ashley Canty finished first with an 8-1 win over Jenny Napela and Maria Toro Moreno, 8-1. No. 2 doubles then fell by the same score. Senior Ashley Pierson and freshman Jordana Klein then fought through for the win at No. 3 doubles, defeating Brooke Urzendowski and Madeline Jolly 8-6.

Pierson made the score 2-0 by earning a 6-5, 6-1 win over Jolly at No. 6 singles. Suga got the match within reach with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Urzendowski at No. 4 singles.

No. 2 and No. 3 singles then finished in favor of the Billikens (4-3) to make the score 4-2. Cunitz was the next to finish her singles match and secured the win for MSU. The senior lost the first set 6-4 and then pushed back to win the next two sets 6-2. Huerth added the final point with a three-set win at No. 5 singles (1-6, 6-4, 6-4) over Toro Moreno.

The Racers continue on their five-match road trip, Thursday, March 1 when they head to Carbondale, Ill., to face Southern Illinois at University Courts at 3 p.m.
