The Murray State women's basketball team had its 2011-12 season come to an end after a 102-77 loss to UT Martin in the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Championship semifinals at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn.
The Racers were led by junior Kyra Watson, who tallied her second career double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds. Red-shirt sophomore Erica Burgess added a team-high 21 points, junior Tessa Elkins added 12 and senior Kayla Lowe tallied 13 points.
The opening six minutes of the first half was a battle for control. The Racers were the first team to go on a run, using a 5-0 mark to take an 11-8 advantage. However, the Skyhawks followed with a 16-2 run over the next 4:30 to push the momentum of the game in their favor. UTM kept the lead in double-digits for most of the remaining time in the first stanza and went into the locker room with a 45-33 lead.
MSU played the second half tighter, but were unable to get enough of a run together to cut the deficit from the opening half. Late in the half the Skyhawks were able to push their advantage out to as many as 28 before earning the 102-77 win.
Three-point shooting was the difference in the game, with UTM hitting 14-of-28 shots from beyond the arc to the Racers 8-of-22 mark.
Notes: This was just the second meeting between MSU and UTM in the OVC tournament, with the Racers having earned a 66-65 overtime win in the March 2, 2007 meeting…this was the final career game for seniors Kayla Lowe and Mallory Schwab…Lowe finishes her career ranked No. 3 on the career three's made list with 143?...Schwab finishes her career ranked No. 5 on the career blocks list, with 58?.
