Catcher Jacob Rhodes went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and six RBIs and Murray State defeated Mid-Continent, 11-1, Tuesday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Breds (11-10) wasted little time getting on the board in the first inning as Ty Stetson ripped a triple into the gap in right center and scored when Travis Isaak followed with a double to left center.
MSU added to its lead in the second as Dylan Wheeler singled to right field on the first pitch of the inning. Noah Zipko walked and Stetson was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, Mike Kozlowski drew a bases-loaded walk before Jacob Rhodes hit an opposite-field grand slam to left center.
The lead grew in the fifth inning as back-to-back fielding errors scored a run and left a runner on second base. Brandon Eggenschwiler drove in the second run of the inning with a single to right field.
MSU was back at it in the sixth as Stetson and Isaak drew back-to-back walks and later scored on a Rhodes two-run single up the middle with two outs.
The Cougars (9-24) got on the board in the eighth inning as Richard Arias hit a solo home run to left field.
The Breds got the run back in the home-half of the inning as Isaak hit a solo home run of his own to left center.
Kyle Cornett (1-1) earned the victory after he allowed just three hits over six shutout innings. He struck out a career-high seven and walked three. Edgar Melendez (0-3) took the loss after allowing one run on two hits in one inning.
Isaak finished the game going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Stetson went 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
The Breds return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon as they play host to Belmont. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
