Breds Lose In Heartbreaking Fashion

For the second time in as many times, the Murray State baseball team suffered a heartbreaking loss as Austin Peay left fielder Cody Hudson delivered a walk-off home run to right field to give the Govs a 13-12 victory in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at Raymond C. Hand Park.
The Breds (18-19, 4-8 OVC) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Ty Stetson ripped a single through the left side and Travis Isaak followed with a two-run home run to left center.
The Govs (22-13, 9-2 OVC) had an answer in the home half of the inning as a pair of walks around a single loaded the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly by Reed Harper scored one run before Greg Bachman hit a three-run home run to right center.
MSU used the long ball in the fifth to regain the lead. With one out, Jacob Rhodes singled up the middle and Mike Kozlowski followed with a single to left field. Brandon Eggenschwiler drove everybody in with a three-run home run to right field.
APSU tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Tyler Childress hit a leadoff home run to left center.
The Govs regained the lead in the sixth as back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out. Hudson hit a sacrifice fly to right field before P.J. Torres used the win and the short porch to right field for a two-run home run.
The Breds put together one of their biggest rallies of the weekend in the eighth as Elliott started the inning with a solo home run to left field. With one out, Paul Ritzheimer singled to short. After a wild pitch, Stetson singled to short to put runners on the corners. Isaak was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Rhodes to hit a chopper over the mound for an RBI. Kozlowski followed with an RBI single to right field, ahead of Isaak scoring from third on a wild pitch. Eggenschwiler followed with a two-run single up the middle to push the advantage to 11-8.
APSU was able to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth as a walk and a single set up Bachman's three-run home run to right center.
MSU regained the lead in the ninth as Ritzheimer was hit by a pitch with two outs and scored on Stetson's RBI double into the gap in left center.
The Govs were able to match it with two outs in the ninth as Hankins delivered an RBI double into the gap in left center.
Will Handlin (3-3) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work. Tyler Rogers (3-0) earned the victory despite allowing five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. He enter the game allowing just one earned run on the season.
Stetson, Kozlowski and Elliott each collected three hits, while Eggenschwiler went 2-for-5 with five RBIs. Each of the top four hitters in the lineup, along with Ritzheimer in the nine hole, scored two runs.
The Breds return to action Wednesday afternoon as they play host to Memphis. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Reagan Field.
