Junior Shelby Kosmecki was masterful in the circle for the Racers Friday afternoon, pitching MSU to a 1-0 win against Tennessee Tech in the first of three games between the two teams at Tech Softball Field in Cookeville, Tenn.
The righty struck out 11 batters on the day, including at least two batters in each inning between the second and sixth innings while striking out the side in the fifth.
She held the Golden Eagles to five hits while walking just one in the seven inning complete game victory.
The Racers (14-12, 9-6 OVC) pushed the only run of the game across the plate in the top of the sixth. Casey Castile and Alexa Becker successfully completed a double steal of third and second, respectively, with one out in the inning. The throw attempt to get Castile out at third was low, hitting the dirt in front of the TTU third baseman and rolled past the left fielder backing up the play, allowing Castile to walk home for the game's lone run.
Tennessee Tech (14-19, 8-8 OVC) had a chance to tie the game in their final chance, putting the winning run on base as the Golden Eagles got a one out single from Chanelle Spalding. She moved into scoring position with two outs on another base hit from Holly Thomas that was off a diving Alexa Becker's glove at short. Cassie Garret came through with TTU's third hit of the inning, singling to right field. Spalding attempted to score from second on the outfield hit, but Mo Ramsey's throw to the plate was on target to catcher Ellyn Troup, who had plenty of time to apply the tag before Spalding reached the plate.
Christian Cox, Megan Glosser and Becker each had two hits in the opening game for the Racers, as MSU held a slight 6-5 hit lead in the game.
Holly Thomas took the loss for Tennessee Tech, falling to 10-10 on the season. She gave up an unearned run in seven innings, allowing six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
