Twenty teams teed off (June 1) at Miller Memorial Golf Course in the Dunker's Scramble Golf Tournament. The event, formerly known as the Racer Classic, was held for the 24th consecutive year and was a benefit for Murray State University Athletics.
“For the past three years we've had temperatures in the 90's, so this year's break in the weather provided ideal conditions for a great round of golf,” Associate Athletic Director Paul Bubb said. “While this is a fund raising event, it is also intended as a fun day at the golf course, and I can say we were successful on both counts this year.”
Racer head coaches Chris Hatcher (football), Alan Lollar (rifle), Velvet Milkman (women's golf), Eddie Hunt (men's golf), David Schwepker (volleyball), Beth Acreman (women's soccer), Rob Cross (women's basketball), Jenny Severns (track and cross country) and Mel Purcell (men's tennis) greeted golfers at lunch and joined them for some of the special contest holes.
While three teams tied for low gross with a 54 last year, only one team was able to match that score this year. The men's division team of Travis Thompson, William Hunt, Matthew Winder and Dave Winder won the championship, while head women's golf coach Velvet Milkman's team won the mixed division low gross with a score of 58. Members of Milkman's team included Jessica Grace, Scott Ellison and Chris Griffin.
Blind draw teams were also assigned for Dunker's Scramble, with an A, B, C and D player selected at random (based upon handicaps or average scores) and placed on a team. The players' team scores were then added together and averaged in order to award first, second and third places. First place with an average of 56 went to Chris Drennan, Brian Epperson, Heath Scott and Dave Winder. Second place, a 57, went to Ford Branch, Jr., Tom Simpson, Travis Thompson and Matthew Winder. Third place went to the team of Paul Akridge, Lance Davis, Jimmy Dan Hicks and William Hunt with a score of 57.25.
Other contest winners included David Roberts (Most Accurate Drive), Lance Davis (Longest Drive), Hal Kemp (Longest Putt) and Steve Farmer (Closest to the Pin).
