MURRAY, Ky. – The athletic department at Murray State University has been awarded a charter in the National College Athlete Honor Society, or Chi Alpha Sigma, the department announced on Thursday.
University officials were informed of organization's decision to grant the charter to the school earlier in the week. As the eighth chapter in the state of Kentucky, Murray State has been given the designation of Kentucky Theta chapter and joins Bellarmine, Centre, Eastern Kentucky, Louisville, Northern Kentucky, Transylvania and Western Kentucky as the Commonwealth's members of the elite organization. The Racers are just the third OVC institution to join Chi Alpha Sigma, along with Eastern Kentucky and Southern Illinois Edwardsville.
Chi Alpha Sigma is the first national scholar-athlete society to honor those collegiate student-athletes who have excelled in both the classroom and in athletic competition. Chi Alpha Sigma recognizes collegiate student-athletes who receive a varsity letter in their sport while maintaining a 3.4 or higher cumulative GPA throughout their junior and/or senior years. The governing board represents all levels of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
“This is an excellent way to further recognize the academic achievements of our varsity letter winners. A criteria of 3.4 as a grade point average is an accomplishment for any student,” said Director of Athletics Allen Ward.
“Having a charter of Chi Alpha Sigma Academic Honor Society on our campus is a nice way for our student-athletes to be recognized for their achievements off the field and court of play. Murray State has a high commitment to academic achievement and this is a good way to showcase those achievements. I am proud of the student-athletes that can compete at a high level and maintain a high GPA as well,” said Matt Kelly, Senior Associate Athletics Director.
The first class of Murray State inductees will be initiated in to the honor society in the spring of 2013. Each inductee will receive a certificate denoting his or her accomplishment at the annual athletic awards banquet, held at the close of each academic year. Student Services and Compliance Coordinator Kellen Wells-Mangold, who headed the effort to bring Chi Alpha Sigma to campus, says the addition of the organization puts Murray State in some elite company.
“It is exciting that we are starting a chapter of a new honor society on our campus. I am happy to serve as the advisor to the chapter,” said Wells-Mangold. “We are now a member along with 222 other four years colleges and universities that have also made the decision to recognize their best and brightest scholar athletes.”
