Volleyball Kicks-Off 2012 Season with First Two Days of Practice
8/10/2012 8:30:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
The Murray State volleyball team officially kicked off its 2012 campaign on Thursday with its first full day of practice. This year's edition of the Racers will feature three seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, a transfer and six freshmen.
With all 15 members reporting, practice “officially” got underway on Wednesday with athletic testing, basic skill reviews and pictures, however Thursday marked the first day for a true a team practice.
After Thursday's practice, head coach David Schwepker gave his thoughts on the two-day old season.
“They are all working really, really hard right now and that is what I like to see in all players, especially my new athletes," said Schwepker. "Right now, we are taking it a little easy; just to make sure we don't have any injuries or overdo it at the beginning of the season. So far, though, I am pretty impressed with what they are doing.”
With one of the most talented recruiting classes ever brought in under Schwepker's tenure, this 2012 edition of the team appears to have all the tools needed for a successful season. This year's incoming crop of student-athletes includes four all-area, district, region or conference selections, a first-team all-state honoree, a first-team academic all-state choice and a junior college conference player of the year.
Along with talent, the Racers have also added significant height to the team this season with the average height of the recruiting class coming in at 5-foot-9. With the added height, the MSU roster now sports six players who came in at 5-foot-10 or above.
While the newcomers have entered this season with much acclaim, eight players from last year's squad have also returned this season and are looking to improve on last season's 8-23 record and help guide the Racers back to the OVC tournament after a one-year absence.
After two full days to get a look at his returners, Schwepker feels that they have come back ready to compete at a very high level this season.
“Most of the players came back in great shape. Lydia [Orf], our captain, is always in great shape, but really came in to camp in even better shape this season, setting a great example for the rest of the team.”
Murray State will begin its 2012 season on the road in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Aug. 24-25, as part of the IPFW invitational. The Racers will open play in the tournament on Friday, Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. against the hosts, the IPFW Mastodons.
