The Murray State volleyball team dropped a non-conference match to regional foe Evansville, 3-0, on Tuesday night at the Carson Center in Evansville, Ind.

The Racers (2-5) had their chances in each set, but lengthy runs from the Purple Aces were able to keep Murray State at bay. MSU led in the first set at 10-9, but an 8-3 run helped Evansville secure the 25-19 opening frame win.

In the second set, the Racers jumped out to 11-3 lead, but Evansville scored 14 of the next 20 points en route to 25-20 second set victory. The third set was a similar story as Murray State held an early 8-6 lead in the set, only to fall 25-15.

After the match, head coach David Schwepker talked about what he learned about his team in the match.

“What I was looking for tonight is to see how we compete day-in and day-out,” said Schwepker. “I wanted to see if we were going to have the same team every match or be an up-and down team. I think we did a good job of being consistent. I don't think we came in tonight as a down team, I feel like we came in, played hard and competed the whole way through.

Freshmen Taylor Olden (Lincoln, Ill.) and Emily Schmahl (Edgewood, Ky.) led the Racer offense with seven kills each, while senior Lydia Orf (St. Louis, Mo.) powered the defense with nine digs. Senior Lia Havili (Haltom City, Texas) also made an impact with 26 assists, while freshman Alyssa Lelm (Mackinaw, Ill.) had three block assists.

Sophomore Ashley Ring (Madison, Wis.) led the Purple Aces in the match by a notching a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs.

The Racers now have a week and a half off before playing in their final early season tournament a week from Saturday. MSU will travel to Morgantown, W.Va., for matches with Cleveland State on Sep. 15, and host West Virginia on Sep. 16, as part of the Blue & Gold Classic.
