The Murray State women's basketball will take its two-game win streak on the road this weekend when it opens a two-game road trip at Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon.
On Monday, the Racers won their second consecutive game by topping Eastern Illinois, 68-58, at the CFSB Center. The win gave MSU a 4-1 record in its first rotation through OVC West opponents.
The Racers struggled out the gate in the contest and trailed for the majority of the half. However, with 7:19 reaming in the frame, freshman Erika Sisk nailed a three to give MSU its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest.
Just two minutes later the Panthers regained the lead and looked poised to go on a lengthy run. However, the Racers once again buckled down and outscored Eastern Illinois 10-2 in the final 4:10 of the stanza, to take a four point lead in the locker room at the break.
In the second half, the Panthers got off to a quick start and retook the lead less than four minutes into the frame. Despite the momentum swing, the Racers were not discouraged and eventually tied Eastern Illinois with 14:38 to play. Senior Mariah Robinson scored the game's next basket to give MSU a lead that they would never give up.
The Racers limited the Panthers to just 31.3 percent from the field on the night, including a paltry 17.2 percent in the second half. MSU also out-rebounded the taller Panthers in the game in an effort that was led by a career-high 18 boards from junior Jessica Winfrey.
Senior Tessa Elkins led Murray State in the game with career-high tying 17 points, while Winfrey paired her 18 rebounds with 10 points for her second double-double of the season and 12th of her career. Robinson also played a big role in the win, as she scored 15 to round the Racers in double digits.
On Tuesday, Erika Sisk, was named as the adidas® OVC Freshman of the Week for the third-straight week and the sixth time this season. Sisk helped pace the Racers to two wins last week, averaging 16.0 points per game over the stretch.
On Saturday, the Oxford, Miss., native tied her career-high by scoring 26 against SIU Edwardsville. The freshman finished the week shooting 35.7 percent from the floor, 36.7 percent from 3-point range and 66.7 from the free throw line. Additionally, she added 1.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 0.5 assists per game to MSU's cause last week.
Saturday will be the 17th meeting all-time between the two teams, with Murray State winning 14 of the previous 16 meetings. The Racers have won the last 11 meetings and are 6-0 all-time in Pete Mathews Coliseum. The only two losses in the series for MSU have come at the CFSB Center where they are 7-2 against JSU. The last loss in the series for Murray State came on Feb. 4, 2006 in Murray, when the Gamecocks won 69-63.
The Gamecocks are still looking for their first win of the season, as they are 0-20 overall and 0-8 in league play. On Wednesday, JSU dropped a hard-fought game on the road to Tennessee State, 76-67. Marikate Gardler and Destany McLin came off the bench to lead the Gamecocks with 6 and 11, points respectively, while Danielle Vaughn led JSU on the boards with 7 rebounds.
Briana Morrow currently leads JSU in both major categories with 9.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, but has not played since Jan. 5. The Gamecocks will enter Saturday averaging 55.3 points per game, while allowing 70.3. They are currently shooting 35.8 percent from the floor, 25.1 percent from 3-point range and 66.0 percent from the free throw line.
