Murray State's men's and women's cross-country teams joined 37 universities and colleges at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. for the 10th annual Bradley "Pink" Classic. Each team was given special pink bib numbers to support breast cancer awareness month. The Racers decided to do their part, taking it a step further and wearing all pink racing singlets.
Representatives of Susan G. Komen for the Cure were on hand and Team Bradley was handing out Bradley Pink bracelets. The course was also lined with pink paint.
Once the races started, both MSU teams saw a number of individuals with personal and season best times. As a whole, the women finished in 14th place out of 24 schools and second of three OVC schools with 364 points. The Racers finished ahead of SIUE (606 points) but behind 10th place SEMO (319). Missouri won the women's race with a score of 65.
The men finished in 21st place out of 22 competing teams. SEMO and SIUE also ran on the men's side and finished in ninth and 12th placed respectively. Bradley won the men's race with 82 points.
Following the race, head coach Jenny Severns spoke about her both of her team's overall performance, "They were all ready to race. I am so proud of all of them. They all fought so hard and worked together as a team. They really earned this with all the hard work they've put in."
Individually, Abbie Oliver led the women with a 50th place finish and new personal best in the 6K race at 22:13. She also had the second fastest time of anyone competing from the OVC. Oliver was followed closely by Carolyne Tanui in 71st place, who crossed the line in 22:28. Competing in their first collegiate 6K race, Emma Gilmore and Alicyn Hester finished in 77th and 79th places respectively. Gilmore completed the race in 22:35 while Hester was a second behind, 22:36.
Overall, nine of the 10 MSU runners ran a personal best, including Brittany Bohn, who rounded out the Racers top five in 87th place. Bohn crossed the line in 22:41.
For the men, Brian Coleman followed up his personal best time at the Louisville Classic with another at Bradley. Coleman dropped well over a minute off his PB, leading the Racers through the 8K course in 26:31. Coleman finished 103rd overall. Evan Staviski also saw a big PB come his way, breaking 27 minutes for the first time, crossing the line in 26:44 to finish in 117th place.
The top five was rounded out by Cole Cisneros, 26:53, Lucas Prather, 26:59 and Clayton Hall, 27:15. Prather's time was a season best for the sophomore while Hall chopped 76 seconds off his personal best time. Eight of the nine individuals record a personal or season best time.
The course at Newman Golf Course was very well groomed and included a number of rolling hills over both the six and 8K races.
The Racers are off for two weeks before heading to Morehead, Ky., Nov. 2, for the OVC Championships hosted by Morehead State. Last season the women captured fourth place while the men finished in eleventh.
