The Murray State women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-0 decision Friday afternoon at Eastern Kentucky in Richmond.
The Colonels (3-10-2, 2-3-1 OVC) struck first in the opening stanza on a strike by Kristan Payter in the 31st minute. Paynter picked up her third goal of the season when she grabbed a pass from Amani Thomas and shot from 15-yards out to find the upper right corner of the net.
Eastern Kentucky added an insurance goal in the 87th minute off the foot of Cassie Smith, on a play, again set-up by Thomas. This time the shot came from 12-yards out and went past MSU goalkeeper Savannah Haberman into the bottom right corner of the net.
Julie Mooney led the Racers in the game in total shots with four, while Kaitlyn Hayes was the team leader in shots on goal with two. Despite the two goals, Haberman finished the day with four saves to push her season total to 73.
With the loss, the Racers fall to 4-9-1 on the year and 1-6-0 in league action. MSU currently has three points in the conference table with three matches left in the regular season. The top six teams in the league advance to next month's OVC Tournament.
On Sunday, the Racers will look to return to the win column when they travel to Morehead State. Kick-off is scheduled for Noon CDT.
