Murray State women's volleyball dropped their third straight OVC contest Saturday at the hands of Morehead State. The Racers, (11-7, 1-3 OVC) kept each set close, but ultimately were swept 3-0 (23-25, 19-25, 19-25) by the Eagles.
Entering the match with 998 career digs, senior libero Katlyn Hudson recorded her 1,000th early in set No. 1. She becomes the 15th student-athlete in Murray State history to achieve the milestone and first since Lydia Orf a season ago. Hudson finished with a match-high 14 digs.
For the first time this season the Racers did not have a single player in double-digit kills. They also hit .048 for the match, their lowest in 18 games this season.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair with each team taking multiple leads. The Racers held a slim one-goal lead late at 22-21, but gave it up on a Hannah Sigala kill and an attack error. Murray State tied the score at 23, but the Eagles put the set away on an Alex Fitzmorris kill and another Racer attack error. Scottie Ingram, who held a share of the team-lead in kills for the match, landed five in the opening set.
Set No. 2 started as a continuation from the first, with neither team grasping more than a two-point lead. Up 11-10, Morehead State extended the lead to 16-10 with a 5-0 run and never looked back on their way to a 25-19 victory. The Racers tried to fight back, closing the gap to four, 22-18 on a pair of Taylor Olden kills and another from Alyssa Lelm, but the Eagles quickly ended that rally. Morehead landed a match-high four total blocks in the set and the Racers finished with a negative attack percentage at -.036. Â
The Eagles scored seven of the first nine points in the third and final set. They led from start to finish, taking the match with a 25-19 win. Murray State valiantly fought back, cutting the lead to one at 14-13, but Morehead State opened the lead back to seven with a 7-1 run to effectively finish off the Racers. Aryn Bohannon and Laura McDermott each had four kills in the set. Bohannon also added seven digs.
Ingram and Lelm led the Racers with nine kills apiece. Though Ingram tallied 10 digs, her streak of six consecutive double-doubles comes to a close as does Lelm's streak of nine straight games with double-digit kills.
For the Eagles, Bohannon led the match with 12 kills and totaled 10 digs for a double-double. Colbey Cameron had a game-best 37 assists and Courtney Smith filled out the scoresheet with seven kills, seven digs and five total blocks.
Murray State is off until next weekend when they welcome UT Martin and Southeast Missouri for back-to-back home games Friday and Saturday, Oct. 11-12. Friday's match is a 7 p.m. start while Saturday's is set for 2 p.m.Â
