Racers Lose Heartbreaker to Austin Peay
11/12/2013 11:04:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Taylor Olden and Emily Schmahl each recorded 15 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Racers (15-14, 5-10 OVC) let a 2-1 lead slip away at the hands of Austin Peay. The loss officially eliminates the Racers from the OVC tournament.
Â
The Racers had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the match, but Governors were able to pull themselves back and steal the match. It was the second time this season the Racers were ahead 2-1 on Austin Peay but couldn't close the door, allowing the Governors to come back in both matches.
Â
Murray State came out on fire the opening set, going up eight, 10-2 and forcing an APSU timeout. The Racers maintained a healthy lead throughout, never allowing the Governors to get closer than five, on their way to a 25-17 win. Schmahl and Alyssa Lelm both knocked down four kills in the set.
Â
The second set again saw MSU take a large, almost identical lead as set No. 1, 10-3, but the Racers couldn't hold on this time. Trailing by 10, 15-5, APSU scored five straight points to cut the lead in half. The lead remained at five as the two squads traded points, but another 5-0 run tied the match for the Governors. Murray State was able to reclaim the lead on three separate occasions, 19-18, 20-19 and 22-21, but each time Austin Peay had an answer. The Governors were finally able to break through for their first lead, 23-22, and the Racers never scored again as APSU completed the comeback with a 25-22 win.
Â
Unlike sets one and two, both teams were fighting for the early advantage in the third stanza. The Racers were up one, 12-11, when the Governors scored three straight to take a two-point lead, 14-12. Murray State quickly retook the lead, scoring nine of the next 10 points on their way to a 25-20 win and 2-1 lead in the match.
Â
Up 2-1, MSU had the chance to put the match away in the fourth frame. After the Racers knotted the set at 7-7, APSU took their largest lead to that point, 10-7. The Governors extended that lead to six, 16-10 and were in control of set. They won easily, 25-18 to force a fifth set.
Â
In the deciding set, the two squads traded points at the outset. Tied at three, the Governors landed three kills during a 4-0 run to take a 7-3 lead and the Racers were unable to come back.
In addition to Olden and Schmahl, Lelm also finished in double-figure kills with 11. Sam Bedard led the Racers in both assists (49) and digs (17) for a double-double. Olden also recorded a double-double picking up 13 digs.
Â
Sammie Ebright and Aubrey Marsellis led the Governors with 12 kills each. Lauren Henderson and Hillary Plybon both chipped in 10. Marsellis racked up a triple-double with a team-best 27 assists and 10 digs.
Â
APSU held a distinct 17.5 to 5 advantage in blocked shots. Plybon knocked back nine herself and Henderson and Marsellis added seven.
Â
The Racers wrap up their season on the road Saturday (Nov. 16) at Eastern Kentucky. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
