As part of the Protect & Serve Day at Murray State's football game against Eastern Illinois University last Saturday (Nov. 9), Racer Athletics hosted a special pregame Salute to Those Who Protect and Serve and honored veterans as well as area law enforcement, fire and other first responders at halftime of the game.
This was the fourth Protect & Serve Day at MSU and Racer Athletics is proud of the roles so many play in protecting its citizens, both here and abroad. The event has become one of the highlights of the football season to set the first home game in November apart to say thank you to these brave individuals.
This year's festivities included a display of various military, police and fire protection vehicles as well as information booths set up by the 101st Airborne Division Parachute Team, the National Guard, the city of Murray fire and police departments and the Wounded Warriors Project. The Blue Star Moms also used the opportunity for individuals to prepare, sign and send Christmas cards to those soldiers overseas this year and unable to be home with loved ones.
"We believe this is a great opportunity for us to say 'thanks' to those who do the jobs everyday which make life in America so special," said associate athletic director Paul Bubb. "Sometimes we take for granted what we have; our freedom, the lifestyle we enjoy and the day-to-day things which many others never experience."
At halftime of the football game special recognition was given to representatives from the 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell, Ky., American Legion posts in Fulton and Murray; Sheriff's representatives from Trigg, Graves and Calloway Counties, Murray National Guard; MSU Veterans Student Organization; MSU ROTC, police departments from Paducah and Murray and the City of Murray Fire Department.
The MSU Marching Band played tribute to the honorees with a special rendition of America the Beautiful" and the display of an large American flag on the field.
Plans are underway for next year's Protect & Serve Day which will be on Nov. 1, 2014.
