Murray State men's and women's cross-country teams finished their 2013 season Friday at the Southeastern Regional held in Charlottesville, Va. The meet was hosted by the University of Virginia at Panorama Farms.
Both teams took on new challenges, running longer distances than accustomed to. The men ran in their first 10K this season and the women competed in just their second 6K. As a team the women finished in 30th place in the 38 team field. The men scored in 33rd place out of 35 teams.
Carolyne Tanui was the top finisher for the women. She finished in 111th place out of 265 runners. Tanui's time of 22:40.8 was the 10th fastest all-time at Murray State. Tanui finished one place and one second ahead of teammate Abbie Oliver (22:41.8).
Brittany Bohn was the third scorer for the women. She crossed the line in 23:09.7 to place 152nd. Alicyn Hester and Abby Baker rounded out the scoring for MSU in 23:49.1 and 25:05.0 respectively. The women were without All-OVC runner Emma Gilmore.
Speaking about the women's race Head Coach Jenny Severns said, ", Abbie, Carolyne and Brittany had really great races. Not having Emma hurt in the team score but I am really happy with how everyone raced. This was the toughest course I have seen and they didn't let that stop them."
The men, running in their first 10K this season, were led by Cole Cisneros. Cisneros finished in 158th place, crossing the tape in 32:36.9. Coach Severns said Cisneros "had his best race of the year."
Evan Staviski, the Racer's top scorer at the OVC Championships, finished behind Cisneros in 33:17.3. His time was good for 184th place.
Lucas Prather (33:48.1, 196th), Brian Coleman (34:16.3, 20th) and Neil Yockey (35:53.2 (220th) completed the scoring for the Racers.
Following the race coach Severns spoke about her team, "I am really proud of the men. It was the first cross-country 10k for six of our seven runners and they ran tough on a really challenging course. Cole, Evan, Lucas and Brian really went for it."
The meet concludes the 2013 cross-country season for the Racers. The women will gear up for the indoor track season, with the first meet Dec. 7 at the Saluki Fast Start in Carbonedale, Ill. It will be the team's only meet before the New Year.
