The Murray State women's basketball team ran into a hot-handed Western Kentucky squad Saturday afternoon at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, leading to a 86-63 loss for the Racers, their first of the season.
The Lady Toppers (2-1) finished the game shooting an impressive 43.6 percent from floor and a solid 72.2 percent at the free throw line. The Racers (2-1) did not have a bad shooting afternoon, turning in a 31.3 percent performance, but it is where the WKU scored its points that proved to be the difference. Western Kentucky outscored the Racers by 40 points in the paint, finishing the game with a 48-8 margin.
Turnovers and second chance points also proved costly for Murray State in the game. The Racers committed a season-high 13 turnovers in the contest, four more than WKU. The 13 turnovers by MSU led to 16 points by WKU, while the Racers only scored eight points off of the Lady Toppers' nine turnovers. In addition, Western Kentucky out-rebounded Murray State, 21-13, on the offensive glass leading to a 25-4 WKU advantage in second chance points.
Jessica Winfrey led both major categories for the Racers with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Keiona Kirby also added 11 for MSU. Chastity Gooch and Jalynn McClain led WKU on the afternoon with a pair of double-doubles of a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds and 12 points and 10 rebounds, respectively.
Murray State will now return to the CFSB Center for a three-game home stand to end November. The Racers will begin the three-game stretch at The Bank Thursday with Wright State at 7 p.m.
