Murray State volleyball welcomed defending OVC Champions, Belmont, to Racer Arena as MSU completed their longest home stand of the season. The Racers were able to get ahead in the match 1-0, but dropped the following three sets in their 3-1 (25-21, 20-25, 17-25, 18-25) loss to the Bruins. The loss put Murray State at 1-3 on the home stand and 13-13 overall (3-9, OVC).
Prior to the game, the team celebrated Senior Day, honoring the Racer's lone senior, Katlyn Hudson. Regarding his only senior Head Coach David Schwepker said, "I really enjoyed coaching her for the last four years. She's been a great person and I'm really going to miss her a lot. She's been a great player for this team for four years. We are definitely going to miss her senior leadership. Next year we don't have any seniors." Schwepker also went on to say, "One of the great things about her is how she can make everybody on the team laugh. She's really, really funny. And I think that's what a lot of people don't know, she's really funny and makes everybody laugh and keeps everybody going all the time."
The Racers kicked off the match with a big opening blow, taking down the defending champs 25-21 to take a 1-0 advantage. MSU led for the entirety of the set and withstood a number of Bruin comebacks. Belmont chipped the Racer lead down to one, 10-9, but a four-point stretch gave the Racers a commanding five point lead. The Bruins couldn't get any closer as the Racers took an early 1-0 lead.
The script was flipped in set No. 2, as this time it was the Bruins who took the lead and never looked back. Belmont jumped out to a large 9-3 lead and was able to put the game in cruise control, downing the Racers by five, 25-20. Alex Martin put away four kills in the set and added a pair of blocks.
The third set saw a little bit of everything, including a 15 minute delay. Early in the set, Belmont had the serve and a 4-2 lead and that's where things got interesting. After much video replay, the Bruins were called for serving out of turn, taking away two of their points away and adding one to the Racers total for the illegal service. When it was all said and done, the Racers had the serve and a 3-2 lead. MSU also took the momentum away from the Bruins as they went on a 6-4 spurt to take a three-point lead, 9-6. But the Bruins scored the next five points on a pair of kills from Jessica Vestal and Jen Myer and a service ace from Hannah Miranda to take an 11-9 lead they never gave up. Murray State was able to hang around for a while, but up 16-14, Belmont put the hammer down and closed the set on a 9-3 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Neither team was able to gain a strong advantage in a fourth set that saw nine ties and four lead changes. With the score knotted at 12-12, the Bruins made a move to put the match away, rambling off eight of the next nine points in the set. The Racers were unable to mount a comeback and the Bruins walked away with a 25-18 set win and a 3-1 match victory.
Murray State's offense was led by freshman Scottie Ingram. Thirteen was the lucky number for Ingram as she picked up her 13th double-double of the season with 13 kills and 13 digs. Emily Schmahl and Taylor Olden each landed seven kills while Sam Bedard earned six to go along with 32 assists.
Three Bruins finished in double-digit kills led by Myer with a match-high 16. Martin picked up 15 and Allison McCoy chipped in with 12. Myer also earned a double-double with 18 digs. Hannah Miranda also registered a double-double with 52 assists and 13 digs.
Murray State will hit the road for their next two matches, Friday (Nov. 8) and Saturday, (Nov. 9) against SEMO and UT Martin. Friday's match is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m.
