The Murray State women's basketball team closes out a three-game home stand at The Bank Thursday with first-time opponent Kennesaw State. The game will be the front end of Racer basketball doubleheader and will be immediately followed by the MSU men hosting Middle Tennessee.
The Racers bounced back from a tough loss to Wright State Tuesday, with a convincing 83-64 win over Saint Louis Thursday at home. Murray State never trailed in the game and the score was tied just once, briefly, at 3-3.
The Racers had a hot hand when it came to shooting on the night, firing 42.9 percent from the floor, 41.0 percent from 3-point range and a season-high 86.7 percent from the charity stripe. The 16-for-39 performance was just one made three and one attempt short of tying the school single-game record in each category.
Keiona Kirby, Taylor Porter and Bianca Babic all had a game-high 17 points, while Jashae Lee followed with 10. The 17 points was a career-high for both Babic and Porter, with Babic's coming in her first career start and Porter's coming off the bench. Jessica Winfrey continued her dominance of the glass for MSU with nine rebounds, while Kirby and Babic added six each.
Tuesday will be the first-ever meeting between Murray State and Kennesaw State and will be the first of three games against Atlantic Sun opponents this season for the Racers. Murray State will travel to Lipscomb on Friday and to Stetson on Dec. 20. The Racers are 7-15 all-time against teams currently in the Atlantic Sun. They are 3-2 against Lipscomb, 1-1 against Mercer, 1-3 against East Tennessee and 2-9 against Northern Kentucky.
The Owls are currently 1-4 this season and are coming off a 78-65 loss at OVC member Jacksonville State last Wednesday. Speaking of the OVC, Kennsaw's lone win this came in their second game of the season when they nipped Tennessee State 70-68.
In the game at Jacksonville State, freshman Deandrea Sawyers poured in a career-high 24 points, but the team was not able to overcome a -12 turnover margin and the Owls fell by 13. Kristina Wells followed Sawyers with 16 points and nine boards, while Ty-Nita Baker added 10 points to the cause.
Baker is currently leading the Owls in scoring on the year with 15.4 points per game, while Wells is following close behind at 13.2. Wells is also averaging a team-high 8.8 rebounds per game, while Baker leads the way in assists with 2.6. The Owls are currently averaging 64.2 points per game and giving up 80.0. They are also being outshot by opponents by 8.5 percent (48.6-40.1), however they are outrebounding foes by a margin of 39.6 to 37.8
