The Murray State women's basketball team will officially begin its 2013-14 Friday when it hosts Robert Morris-Springfield at the CFSB Center.
The Racers launched their 2013-14 campaign with a 103-59 exhibition win over Berea Sunday at the CFSB Center. All 13 players scored in the game for the Racers, with five registering in double figures. MSU shot 38.7 percent from the floor in the game, including an astounding 15 made 3-pointers.
Jessica Winfrey led the way for MSU with the game's lone double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Nikia Edom came off the bench to lead all scorers with 17 points. Keiona Kirby added 16 points to the cause, while Taylor Porter and Julia Fox rounded out the double-digit Racers with 15 and 12, respectively. Chanyere Hosey also had a big night, as she pulled down a game-high 12 boards to go along with seven points.
Friday will be the first-ever meeting between the Racers and Robert Morris-Springfield. The Eagles are off to a 3-2 start to the season, but have dropped their last two contests. On Saturday, the Eagles fell, 57-51, to Trinity International in the finale of the Trinity International Classic.
Traci Osby came off the bench on the contest to lead RMU with 18 points, while Marquichea Burns led the team on the boards with eight. Cassandra Baker is leading Robert Morris on the year with an average of 23.3 points, 11.7 rebounds and 5.7 steals per game, but has not played in the last two contests. Following behind Baker, is Burns who is averaging 12.8 points and nine rebounds a game.
This year will be the 46th season opener for the Racers and they are 18-27 overall in those games and 21-20 in home openers. Friday will mark the 18th time that the home opener and season opener have occurred on the same date, with MSU holding a 9-7 record in those contests.
Since moving to the CFSB Center for the 1998-99 season, Murray State has posted an 8-7 record in home openers. Last year, Western Kentucky ended a six-year winning-streak in home openers when it topped MSU, 80-69. Since taking over as head coach, Rob Cross has posted a 3-2 record in season openers and is 4-1 in home openers, suffering his first home opening loss last season.
